From the recording Darkness Won't Prevail
I first heard this song on John Michael Talbot's Birth of Jesus album years ago, and had wanted to record my own version since. Originally a chant that scholars agree was in wide use by the church of Jerusalem and Antioch by the 4th-5th century, it expresses the awe and mystery of the incarnation.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Let all mortal flesh keep silence
And with fear and trembling stand
Ponder nothing earthly minded
For with blessing in His hand
Chorus 1
Christ our God
To earth descendeth
Our full homage to demand
Verse 2
King of kings yet born of Mary
As of old on earth He stood
Lord of lords in human vesture
In the body and the blood
Chorus 2
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heav'nly food
Verse 3
Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day
Chorus 3
That the pow'rs of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away
Verse 4
At His feet the six winged seraph
Cherubim with sleepless eye
Veil their faces to the Presence
As with ceaseless voice they cry...They Cry
Chorus 4
Alleluia alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High
Alleluia alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High
Alleluia alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High
