From the recording Darkness Won't Prevail
The original lyrics date back to a seven verse poem from the 8th Century. A metrical version of five of the verses appeared in the 13th century, and was later translated to English in 1851.
Lyrics
Verse 1
O come O come Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Chorus
Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
Verse 2
O come O come,
Thou Dayspring come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight
Chorus
Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
O Come, O Come,
O Lord, our Lord... Come
O Lord come will lead us home
Verse 3
O come Desire of nations bind
All peoples in one heart and mind
Bid envy strife and quarrels cease
Fill the whole world with heaven's peace
Chorus
Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, oh rejoice
Shall come to thee O Israel
